We have designed this institute to support you—and through you, your colleagues—as you rise to the challenge of starting the 2020-21 school year, a year unlike any we’ve ever experienced. By tapping into the talents, resources, experiences, and moral strength of the TCRWP staff and of each other, we’ll grow stronger, becoming the leaders we want to be for our students and school communities. Whether teachers are teaching virtually or in person, you’ll learn ways to help them acknowledge what students have experienced and support healing and growth.

One of the challenges for the fall is that, while we need to provide kids with social and emotional support, we also need to assess kids’ skill development in order to maximize their forward progress. You’ll hear the TCRWP’s suggestions for ways to help students make up for the inevitable gaps and to accelerate their progress. Supporting kids will require intense collaboration. You’ll hear how to recruit cohorts of teachers who plan together and share best practices, helping to create consistency across a school, and how to ensure that teachers can meet kids’ needs. You’ll leave ready to create communities of practice that tap into new sources of expertise within your school.

As we write this description, it’s not clear if children will be back in their classrooms or continuing to learn remotely. It is entirely possible that we need to prepare for a future of both in person and virtual instruction. In all cases, this institute will allow you to draw on the collective insights of the TCRWP community to maximize the power of digital teaching. You’ll learn about new, kid-facing virtual teaching in preparation for the new year, and you will have opportunities to learn from our collective wisdom about how best to adjust units of study and workshop teaching for this new teaching context.

The institute will be a coaching institute, so our focus will be on methods, schedules, resources, and ways you can be a powerful force in your school and district community.
