Upper West Side
We do not provide meals for participants during the summer institutes. In the Trail Guide (Institute’s Daily Schedule), we publish a list of restaurants in the nearby area so that participants are able to plan their meals. In an effort to further assist you, we decided to provide this list of some of our staff’s favorites so that you can plan to get the best of what the UWS has to offer by way of cuisine, beforehand. We hope it helps.
A quick word about location. Many of these restaurants are located on the UWS of Manhattan, but not close enough to campus to visit during your lunch break. The restaurants listed first and starred * are walkable from Teachers College and open during your breaks. As always, the Teachers College cafeteria, located on the basement level of Grace Dodge, will be open throughout the summer.
Lastly, and probably most importantly, for your morning cup-of-joe, there is a coffee cart located on the south side of 120th Street (across the street from Teachers College). On this same corner there is also a Joe’s Coffee located on the second floor of Columbia’s new science building, at 550 West 120th Street. Finally, there is a Starbucks located in Teachers College, outside of Gottesman Library, on the ground floor, which opens around 8:30 am daily.
