The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) is pleased to acknowledge two of the five New York City elementary schools named as 2018 National Blue Ribbon recipients.
P.S. 6 Lillie Devereaux Blake School and P.S.183 Robert Louis Stevenson School were among 349 schools recognized nationally by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. Both elementary schools were listed under the Exemplary High Performing Schools category for their high performance on state and nationally normed assessments.
In their official Blue Ribbon application, principals at both schools acknowledged the importance of their ongoing relationship with TCRWP.
“Our work with TCRWP has been a major support for our literacy instruction, ” wrote P.S. 6 Principal Lauren Fontana. “Teachers and staff developers work collaboratively to study curricula, and look at student work in order to create targeted instruction. Using learning progressions and rubrics to assess student work has been a big part of our professional development, resulting in student improvement.”
P.S. 183 Principal Martin Woodard noted the 7-year partnership with TCRWP and the benefits his students have gained in the area of writing.
“Within a school year, K-5 students write and publish how-to books, realistic fiction stories, poems, all about books on particular topics of interest, and opinion pieces about issues that matter to them. Students write for an authentic purpose with a particular audience in mind,” wrote Woodard.
The Project commends the strong commitment to literacy at both schools, and the commitment of the administrators, teachers, students, parents, and community to high-quality instruction.
P.S. 6 is located east of Central Park and near the Metropolitan Museum of Art in District 2 in Manhattan. Within the 650-plus student body, 45 different cultures are represented. The school’s website is at: http://ps6nyc.com/
P.S. 183 is located in the heart of the Upper East Side in Manhattan in District 2.The school educates over 580 students in grades Pre-K through Grade 5 with diverse backgrounds.
