No One Gets to Own the Term “The Science of Reading”

Teachers and school leaders have been asking for Lucy Calkins and TCRWP to respond to the challenges issued by people who call their position ‘THE science of reading.’ Calkins begins by arguing that no one person gets to own the science of reading. Research supports many aspects of reading education: read alouds, writing about reading, the importance of background knowledge, a volume of highly engaged reading, access to high interest books…and yes, explicit instruction in phonics as well.
