Senior Staff not only co-lead the organization, they also work with school leaders, develop curriculum, and provide staff development to mentor schools and teacher-leaders.
Lucy Calkins, Founding Director of the TCRWP, is the author or co-author of two score of books including the newly released Units of Study in Phonics (Grades K-1) and soon to be released Grade 2, Units of Study for Teaching Reading (Grades K-5), Units of Study in Opinion, Information, and Narrative Writing (Grades K-5), Units of Study in Argument, Information, and Narrative Writing (Grades 6-8), written with the TCRWP community, and Pathways to the Common Core, one of the top ten New York Times best-selling educational books of 2013. Lucy is the Richard Robinson Professor of Children's Literature at Teachers College, Columbia University where she co-directs the Literacy Specialist Program.
Laurie Pessah, Senior Deputy Director of the TCRWP, is responsible for organizing staff development and shares responsibility for coaching staff developers. As a former principal and director of literacy, Laurie is deeply involved with working with school leaders. She leads K-2 staff development with Amanda Hartman. Laurie is co-author of Nonfiction Reports and Procedures in Units of Study for Primary Writing: A Yearlong Curriculum, A Principal's Guide to Leadership in the Teaching of Writing, and How-To Books: Writing to Teach Others, a unit of study for Kindergarten writers.
Mary Ehrenworth, Ed.D., is Senior Deputy Director of the TCRWP. Mary is author and co-author of many articles and books, including The Power of Grammar; Pathways to the Common Core; and many titles in the Units of Study in Reading and Writing. She works with schools and districts around the globe, and is a frequent keynote speaker at Project events and national and international conferences.
Amanda Hartman, Deputy Director for Primary Literacy of the TCRWP, heads up K-2 reading and writing as well as the TCRWP's coaching institutes and presents at conferences around the world. She is the co-author of various professional texts including One-to-One: The Art of Conferring with Young Writers, and of multiple titles in both the reading and writing Units of Study series, including Lessons from the Masters, Grade 2 and Learning About the World: Reading Nonfiction, Grade 1.
Colleen Cruz, Director of Innovation, is a writer of children's literature and of professional texts for teachers including Independent Writing, A Quick Guide to Reaching Struggling Writers, K-5, The Art of Information Writing, Grade 3, The Arc of Story, Grade 4, Writing Realistic Fiction: Symbolism, Syntax, and Truth, Grade 7, Fantasy Book Clubs: The Magic of Themes and Symbols, Grade 5, and The Unstoppable Writing Teacher.
Emily Butler Smith, Associate Director for Professional Development, taught in Colorado and at PS 116 in New York City before joining the TCRWP. While working at the Project, Emily earned her Ed.D. from Teachers College in Curriculum and Teaching. Emily led a collaboration between the TCRWP and The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation devoted to the teaching of history and literacy. She is co-author of The Lens of History a unit of study for fifth grade writers and Reading the Weather, Reading the World a unit of study for fourth grade readers.
Kate Montgomery is Education in Emergencies Director, Global Initiatives. Kate has taught and worked in teacher education primarily in Harlem, Kenya, the Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia and Thailand and recently on locations across the Balkan forced migration route. After years of curriculum development with the TCRWP and Heinemann, Kate now works with teachers and kids in under-resourced places around the world, leading TCRWP collaborations with communities working in tough situations, innovating together to improve children's access to fascinating, healthy, relevant, high-quality education.
Sonja Cherry-Paul, Director of Diversity and Equity, taught middle-school students for twenty years. She earned her Ed.D at Teachers College in Curriculum and Teaching where her research and writing focus was on teaching about race and racism in K-12 classrooms. She presents at national conferences and is the co-author of professional texts for teachers including: Critical Literacy: Unlocking Contemporary Fiction; Breathing New Life Into Book Clubs: A Practical Guide for Teachers; Teaching Interpretation: Using Text-Based Evidence to Construct Meaning, and Flip Your Writing Workshop: A Blended Learning Approach.
